Outdoor-adapted dogs pick up more parasites. A year-round prevention routine matters more than any supplement.

The Indian pariah dog, often called the Indie, is a native breed that has lived alongside people on the subcontinent for thousands of years. Indies are alert, intelligent and adaptable, and they are generally robust and well suited to Indian conditions. Many people adopt one from a shelter or rescue.

Indies are quick learners and bond strongly with their families. They are watchful by nature and often wary of strangers at first, so gentle socialisation helps. Each dog is an individual, and early training and patience bring out their best.
Feed a complete and balanced food suited to their age, size and activity level. Indies are usually hardy eaters, but they still need measured portions to stay at a healthy weight. Keep fresh water available at all times. Rescued dogs may need a gradual diet transition and a vet check first.
Expect at least an hour of daily activity. Indies enjoy walks, fetch and problem-solving games, and they do well with a secure space to run.
The short coat needs minimal grooming: a weekly brush and an occasional bath. Regular tick and flea prevention is important, particularly in the monsoon. Keep vaccinations and deworming up to date, and have any rescued dog checked by a vet.
Indies are generally healthy, but skin allergies and tick-borne infections are common in India. Routine parasite prevention and check-ups go a long way.
