The Maine Coon is one of the largest domestic cat breeds, known for its size, tufted ears, thick coat and gentle, sociable nature. Often called a gentle giant, it is playful and good with families, but its size and coat bring extra care needs.

Maine Coons are friendly and curious, and they tend to follow their family around the house. They are usually good with children and other pets, and many enjoy water and games of fetch. They are chatty in a soft, chirping way.
They grow slowly and keep developing for several years. Feed a complete and balanced food suited to their life stage, and measure portions to avoid excess weight, which strains joints. Wet food and fresh water support hydration and urinary health.
The long coat needs brushing a few times a week, and daily in shedding season, to prevent matting around the belly, tail and behind the ears. Trim nails, check ears and brush teeth regularly. Provide a large, sturdy scratching post and a roomy litter tray.
The thick coat makes Maine Coons sensitive to heat. Keep them in a cool, ventilated room during summer, provide plenty of water, and avoid hot parts of the day.
Heart disease, hip problems and obesity are seen in the breed. Regular vet check-ups, a healthy weight and a vet's advice on screening help catch issues early.
